Travelling to Tasmania

As Tasmania is Australia's Island State, entry into Tasmania is either by plane or ferry. For some, it can be a toss-up between flying and hiring a car when you arrive, or catching the boat and bringing your own vehicle. Prices do fluctuate throughout the year according to season and availability, so make sure you do a little research prior to booking.

As of March 2020; Tasmania has commercial airports located at Hobart, Launceston, Devonport and Wynyard that are serviced by a number of airlines including QANTAS, Virgin Blue, Jetstar and REX. Direct flights are generally available to Tasmania from Melbourne, Brisbane and Sydney.

The trip over Bass Strait on the Spirit of Tasmania ferry takes about 10 hours or so. During May to November the twin ships do one sailing each a day, leaving Devonport and Melbourne in the evening and arriving at their respective destinations early morning, passing each other on the high seas in the dark of night. December to April the ships sail twice daily in order to meet the increase in bookings that the warmer months bring.

Car rental companies are situated at all major airports and most are also centrally located within the major city centres of Launceston and Hobart. For contact details of airlines and car rental companies please refer below.
